National Book Festival

Out and about on the national mall today. Seems like half the country is here. Lots of protests, music events, segway enthusiasts and the book festival. The latter is why I am here, trying to get a few autographs and not get rained on. I have Dan and his kids here with me, they are loving all the kid stuff (me too).

Last night at Wolftrap

Filed under: Life Rants — Administrator @ 8:17 pm

So its been a long hot summer here in North Virginia, but at least my Sunday evenings have been eventful.
This summer myself and my good friend Jen volunteered to work at the Wolftrap National Park. We worked the dinner gate, which is this side entrance into the ampitheater. Our responsibilities included handing out programs, answering questions and taking tickets when it got t busy. We were always teamed with one of the paid staff since we were only volunteers.
It was a pretty good gig. The job is very easy, most of the people (staff and patrons) were very cool to work with. We got to hear some good bands. It seemed that working Sundays meant the classic circuit, BB King, Beach Boys, Tom Jones. But there were also some good plays like Peter Pan and My Fair Lady. I suspect we will work it again next year.

RSS Feeds

Filed under: Life Rants — Administrator @ 10:38 pm

Well I was asked yesterday if I had turned on my RSS feeds from my blog. This quickly showed my ignorance on the subject. I had thought that WordPress automatically just provided RSS feeds (since it was on the front panel), but I found out quickly that there was a bug in letting that functionality work.
After some bumbling and research I found the problem and fixed it. You can now use the RSS and Comments RSS features on the front page if you like. I am using the trial addition of FeedDemon right now, its kind of cool.

Whats on my Treo 650

Filed under: Life Rants — Administrator @ 10:42 pm

So I met a pretty nice person over the weekend who inquired about what was on my Treo 650. Since this has happened a couple of times, I figured I would go ahead and post everything here.

AOL 3.3 - I have to have easy access to my AOL mail, and even though this was not a free client, it does the job of mail and IM’s perfectly.

Bejeweled 2, v1.2 - Great game just like the one on the computer. I play it from my SD card since it is a memory hog.

Colortris v1.6.1 - Another great time killer when your sitting in line someplace. Works off the Tetris theme and throws in the option of linking colors to get rid of blocks.

CradleCare v2.6 - This is a necessity for me. I can customize this so that when my Treo is charging in its cradle at home it will forward all calls to my home number. Makes it much easier on my when I am sleeping soundly and don’t have to run all the way into the living room to get my cell.

Directory Assistant v3.20 - This is a very sweet (and free) program for having a handy yellow/white pages on your Treo. It will sync with your internet connection for mapping with mapquest and also do reverse directorys (for when you get those calls but you don’t know who from).

eWallet v4.0.1 - Very secure way to handle management of personal information. You can setup all your credit cards, bank accounts, website logins, etc on your computer and it will sync to your Treo. Then just remember one password to access it all through heavy encryption.

Filez v6.8.3 - Good free program that allows you to delete all your palm files individually.

Freecell v2.02 - Fun card game, another time killer.

Galaxian v1.06 - Nice Galaga clone on the palm.

mSafe v3.7 - This is my security program. Anytime my phone is shut off I have to enter a password to get into its features, otherwise it just shows my personal information on the screen. Also I can SMS the phone with one word and it will lock it OR send an SMS of another word and it will erase all but basic features on the phone.

Pocket Tunes v3.0.9 - This is my music source for my Treo. It allows me to listen to streaming music from a variety of sources on the web as well as listening to any MP3’s I have on my SD card.

Qset v1.0 - This is a quality utility for the Treo camera. By default the camera is set to 60% compression but this allows you to move it up to 99%, using more room per pic, but also increasing the quality. This should only be for the Treo 600 but I figured it couldn’t hurt to have it on my 650.

Snapper Mail v1.9.2 - My perfered email client. I do all of my blogging with this program. A more robust email program than the included Versamail.

TCPMP v0.66 - The Core Pocket Media Player. Small program that allows you to watch video (avi, mov, etc) on your treo.

TreoAlertMgr v2.03 - Allows me to manipulate my alert sounds and frequencys on a level that the default does not come close too.

TreoGuard v1.8 - This along with my PocketTunes allows me to use MP3’s as a ringtone. Very handy!

Tube - Nice program that allows me to load up various city and subway maps from around the world.

VeriChat v2.86b - This is my lifeline to work and my friends. Allowing me to log in to mulitple instant message accounts including AIM, Yahoo, MSN and ICQ all at the same time.

WorldMate Pro v5.0.41 - Okay, since I am an information junkie, this satisfys my appitite. Allowing me to have multiple city tracking of time/weather and constant updates. Easy conversion tables and just about anything else I need when I travel.

ZLauncher v5.10.3 - This is the premier program for launching applications from your SC card (in my opinion at least). Very robust yet easy to use.

Ping me with what you use, I am always on the lookout for interesting programs.

Johnny the Barbarian

So another year has past and DragonCon is behind me. And while I may be King over all I observe, I still brood until the next great Con to battle.

Gene Loves Jezebel

Who would have imagined catching this great band playing at the convention. I hung around for a couple of songs, but the body was starting to crash.

Empire Recruits

Oh no…its some weird crossover where the Star Wars universe meets DC Comics. And here Batman and Robin were recruited by the Empire…shocking!

Masquerade

So tonight was the big costume contest here at DragonCon. There were almost 100 people in it this year with everything from little babys to giant robots.
As always there were great, good, ehh, and what-were-they-thinking. When an act got long or just bad, the stormtrooper would come out to escort them off the stage. This was not always just, and should probably be looked at by the director closer in the future.
I am only posting a few photos right now and will upload the rest when I get home to my gallerys.

Dealers Room

So of course every convention has to have a decent huksters room. Those fans need their tacky shirts, games, jewelry, leather work (heh) and books. This show has two large rooms of which to find stuff from all over.
After coming to these things for over 20 years I rarely find anything that peaks my interest, but plenty do.
