Okay…time for Spring

Filed under: Out and about — Administrator @ 3:53 pm

Boy…Did we get the snow this morning. It came down about an inch an hour for 4 hours, then started slowing down.

Course I had to dig my car out since I was working today, but it was a thick non-stick snow so easy to move around. Kinda gloomy grey for the day, but did get a nice pic of the pond at work.

That’s not pinkeye…that’s the living dead!

Okay, not the living dead but very tired. And yeah, I have pinkeye.

I have been nursing this cough and sore throat all week. and last night I contract pinkeye! Good lord, I was 4 the last time I had this.

So since I knew this was very contagious I headed into the Urgent Care clinic today for some meds. This is my first time at such a place and I have to say I was quite impressed. In and out in under an hour and just my $35 copay to boot.

Check out those shelves, they are ready for anything.

David is 1337

Filed under: Out and about — Administrator @ 2:41 pm

This week my CTO gets the bright idea of having tours at our Data centers. Now this is nothing new to us but these tours involved the non-techies from our company.

So being the manager of the NOC that they were touring it was passed on to me. And being a well rounded (no jokes please) manager I quickly delegated this face time to my SA David.

He has done these tours before and while he acts crowd shy, I know he likes to show off his knowledge. And he did an excellent job…May have to get him a cookie!

Browncoats unite

So who out there hasn’t seen the Firefly series or Serenity movie yet? Well shame on you if you haven’t…Go out and rent them now!
The tv series, Firefly was short lived…Mainly by mishandling of the studios. But the fans, called Browncoats, made such a clamor that they made a feature film based on the series.
Today I got to meet up with a bunch of the east coast Browncoats and got to see them put on a short skit. I have to say I love seeing the passion from everyone that they have for this show. This is the true spirit of fandom.

Richard Hatch

Not sure how many of you watch the new Battlestar Galactica but I highly recommend it. One of the stars from the original show is also in the new show, albeit as a different character. I have met Richard a few times in the past and even ran a con a long time ago where he was a guest.
Today I find myself working security at Farpoint standing next to Richards table. Its interesting seeing the wide range of fan ages coming up for autographs. He has a strong female fan base with very differing ages. Its nice that he has basically reinvented his career even if its on the same show.

Oh my god…

So there I am in the bar having a drink with Ron Glass…And low and behold I see a guy that is naked wearing a bikini. Obviously I worry that I have to much to drink at this point. But sure enough there is a fat white guy in a black bra, panties and hose. Spare me please!!

Charity auction

So I am curious…What makes a convention run a charity auction at 9pm on Friday night. I mean really….Friday typically has VERY low attendance so why have it then. And at 9pm? The only thing I can figure is they are trying to get the con regulars after they have been in the bar for awhile!

At Hunt Valley

Well I have made my yearly pilgrimage to Hunt Valley Maryland for Farpoint Con. Farpoint is named after the first Star Trek Next Generation episode, but I always think of it as Snow Con since the year the blizzard trapped us at the hotel. We may get some snow this weekend but right now the focus is on what is left over from last weeks storm. As you can tell the courtyard is iced in so bad it would be almost impassible. Luckily the parking area is okay.

Winter wonderland?

Filed under: Out and about — Administrator @ 2:12 pm

Ahhh…Winter in Virginia, nothing quite like it. Well, most years anyway. This year its more like winter in Oklahoma.

Odd fluctuation’s in warm and cold weather. One week in the 70’s and the next in the teens. Now we finally get a little snow but its followed up by an ice storm. It actually got bad enough for most businesses to close and even canceled my bowling and college classes.

I stayed home during all this, no reason to drive around with all the nuts out there. Speaking of nuts, check out my boss Al’s parking job!

Diverse work place

Filed under: Out and about — Administrator @ 11:59 am

Sometimes you look around at work and just smile. Its a rough sea lately here at the ol’ grind but I still like the place.
Today I attended a seminar on proper ergonomics and lifting techniques. Most of the information I was familiar with but the instructor did make the examples very job oriented for us. But it was over 2 hours long, and at some point it stops being instructive and more repetition to get you to keep your back properly alligned than anything else.
I did get the great photo of Matt standing on a chair next to Stretch. Stretch is about 6′6" I guess, not sure on Matt but he is height challenged. But we hire regardless of height!
